August Wilson Monologue Competition

August Wilson Monologue Competition

“Your heart flutters. Fear and excitement run through your bones. You walk on to the stage then suddenly the spot light shines on your face. As you adjust your eyes you begin to embrace the actor within.”

AWMC-logo-final-color-291x300As Atlanta’s Prominent Theater Company, Kenny Leon’s kl is proud to present their 8th Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition. For almost a decade this competition has been open to 9th through 12th graders within Greater Metro Atlanta Schools. Because, of the past success of this competition True Colors has added five days of preliminary competitions which will be followed by a semifinal and a final round.

Students will be given a variety of 10 plays to choose from using the August Wilson Century Cycle. And if you know like I do, there are lots of amazing speeches and dialogues to pick from. They will be given 1-3 minutes to perform a chosen monologue. Students will be judged by a panel of professionals within the Atlanta Theater and Media Companies. Previous judges included radio personalities Frank Ski and Wanda Smith of V-103. SO BRING IT! Judges will be looking for high levels of preparedness, clarity, connection and commitment.

August Wilson inspired many with his plays. Plays included but were not limited to Fences, which won a Tony Award and The Pittsburgh Cycle, where he was rewarded with not one but two Pulitzer Prizes. With help from Kenny Leon, Co-Founder and Artistic Director and Todd Kreidler, Associate Artistic Director this competition has made a huge impact and lasting impression on inspiring young actors and actresses.

  1. This is a very previledged experience for the youths to be in this kind of competition to show what they worth and how good or competitive they could be. I think this will help them in their future and it will encourage them too
